I-94 Exit 161 Reconstruction

About The Project

NDDOT broke ground on the I-94 Interchange (Exit 161) Reconstruction project in spring of 2024, with construction expected to run through the summer of 2026. The interchange reconstruction project is designed to support growth in this area of Bismarck and relieve what has become an increasingly congested corridor along Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway and I-94. NDDOT has worked closely with the City of Bismarck, local business owners, and the general public to find a traffic solution that would benefit the entire community. The modified single-point urban interchange (SPUI) selected for this project will efficiently move large volumes of traffic by converging traffic under one set of traffic signals. Use this page to stay updated on project developments, traffic impacts, and important safety information related to this project.

Project Updates

Construction Progress

  • Crews are finalizing new bridge deck pours, with completion expected by mid-July.
  • Work continues on the Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway and the new bridge alignments.
  • Pavement work underway on the structure's west side.

Traffic Impacts

  • Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway reduced to one in each direction from Trenton Drive to Miriam Avenue, with a temporary pedestrian walkway in place. Pedestrians follow a designated path, briefly return to the existing bridge sidewalk, then reconnect with the temporary walkway.
  • Miriam Avenue closed to the west of Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway. Detour provided via Divide Avenue.
  • I-94 reduced to one lane in both directions to support new bridge construction.
  • Temporary loop ramps in use at the interchange. Learn the traffic pattern changes below:
    • Enter I-94 West via the temporary loop ramp – existing on-ramp closed.
    • Exit I-94 East via the temporary loop ramp – existing off-ramp closed.
    • Use existing ramps to enter I-94 East or exit from I-94 West.
