BISMARCK, N.D. — The morning of Wednesday, September 3, traffic will officially shift to the new bridge as part of the Interstate 94 Exit 161 Interchange project. The old bridge will be fully closed to traffic, allowing crews to begin work on the interchange’s east side.

Crews will install traffic control equipment overnight Tuesday, September 2, for the new temporary traffic pattern:

Westbound I-94

  • All Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway drivers will enter I-94 West by turning onto the new northwest on-ramp. Drivers will exit I-94 West using the new temporary off-ramp.

Eastbound I-94

  • Drivers will exit I-94 East using the new southwest off-ramp (the loop off-ramp is now closed for construction). Drivers will enter I-94 East using the existing southeast on-ramp.

Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway will remain reduced to one lane in each direction across the new bridge.

  • Pedestrians will now use the new bridge sidewalks. Temporary barriers are in place near Miriam Avenue to safely guide foot traffic from the existing walkways.

The old bridge will be blocked off by barricades and demolition is planned for late September.

Expect additional traffic pattern changes as construction continues. Motorists are advised to follow posted signs and stay alert for crews and equipment while driving through the work zone.

The I-94 Exit 161 Interchange project, which began in spring 2024, will continue through summer 2026. The project is designed to improve traffic flow by eliminating two left-turn movements and adding right-turn loops for more efficient travel. NDDOT appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this essential infrastructure project moves forward.
