As motorcycle season begins across North Dakota, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE) of North Dakota in partnership with Vision Zero are encouraging riders to take simple steps that can make a life-saving difference.
Motorcycles offer little protection in a crash, making riders more vulnerable to serious injury or death. In 2024, the majority of motorcycle crashes in North Dakota resulted in serious injury or fatal outcomes.
Riders are encouraged to wear All The Gear, All The Time (ATGATT) and continue building their skills through a rider course. Proper protective gear, including a DOT-approved helmet, can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury.
"Taking a rider safety course is one of the best ways to protect yourself and build confidence on the road," said Lonnie Bertsch of ABATE of North Dakota. "No matter your experience level, there's always something to learn. And we always remind riders to wear ATGATT."
Drivers also play a role in motorcycle safety by staying alert and sharing the road.
"Motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility," said Karin Mongeon, NDDOT Highway Safety Division director. "Drivers can help prevent crashes by slowing down, checking blind spots and giving motorcycles the space they need. A second look can save a life."
