What to Bring to Your Motor Vehicle Appointment

Having the right documents with you helps your motor vehicle appointment go quickly and smoothly. Below you'll find what to bring for the most common transactions, including buying a vehicle, updating your vehicle information, transferring a vehicle to North Dakota, and renewing or registering a vehicle. Requirements vary by transaction, so find the section that matches your visit and check your paperwork before you arrive.

Please bring the following:

1. Valid Identification
   1. A current state or government-issued photo ID.
2. Vehicle Title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO)
   1. Must be properly completed for transfer of ownership.
   2. No write-overs, cross-outs, mutilations, or use of white-out.
3. Secure Odometer Disclosure (2011 and Newer Vehicles)
   1. Mileage must be completed by the seller.
   2. Typically included on the vehicle title.
4. Damage Disclosure –SFN 18609 (Completed by Seller)
   1. Required for vehicles less than nine model years old (current model year plus previous eight).
   2. Seller must provide a completed SFN 18609.
5. Bill of Sale
   1. Required for purchases from a dealership.
   2. Large trucks may require an empty weight ticket.

2. Address Change

   • You must be listed as the vehicle owner

3. Legal Name Change
   Bring:
   • North Dakota title
   • Current vehicle mileage
   • Valid state or government-issued photo ID showing your new legal name

4. Add or Remove an Owner
   Bring:
   • North Dakota vehicle title (if available) or required ownership documents
   • Current vehicle mileage
