FAQ

North Dakota Mobile ID is a voluntary, secure, digitized version of your North Dakota- issued driver license or identification card available in Google Wallet. North Dakota Mobile ID offers even more security than the physical, plastic DL/ID because you get to choose what personal information you share with others. It is only available to individuals who have a current, valid North Dakota-issued driver license or state-issued identification card.

You must have an eligible North Dakota driver license or state-issued identification card.

To enroll you must have:

  • A valid and easily readable North Dakota driver license or state-issued ID card

  • An authentication method for your device (e.g. fingerprint or PIN)

  • A $5 dollar fee is required to register your driver license or ID with North Dakota Mobile ID.

For minimum system requirements, please visit the Google Wallet Help Center.

The state of North Dakota requires residents to pay a fee of $5 to obtain a mobile driver license. This fee is paid one time per renewal cycle of your physical license should you choose to get a mobile driver license. The state will not issue a refund for the $5 fee after your mDL is successfully provisioned to a Digital Wallet.

For residents who have not previously prepaid, you will be directed to the official North Dakota State website to complete the payment once the State has approved your request to add a mobile driver license. You can cancel your request at any time before completing payment without being charged.

The fee is payable to NDDOT. The Digital Wallet does not receive any portion of this fee.

To get North Dakota Mobile ID on your Android device, start with the Google Wallet app. Google Wallet can also be downloaded in Google Play. You must have Google Wallet installed to continue.

The verification process involves capturing a photo of the front and back of your physical card. If you don’t have one, you can request a duplicate driver license or ID card through NDDOT Online Services or visiting a NDDOT Driver License office. There is an $8 duplicate card fee.

For most users, approval will happen same-day. For others, additional verification may be needed by visiting NDDOT Online Services.

In some cases, additional verification will be needed to participate in North Dakota Mobile ID. Many customers will receive instructions from Google Wallet and will be able to verify through NDDOT Online Services.

Sometimes this will require a confirmation code that will be sent to you by mail. If your case requires additional verification, you will receive a notification from Wallet with directions on how to move forward.

What are the most common reasons customers can’t add their driver license/IDs to their device?

  • The lighting around your video matters: don’t take your video in a vehicle; use a blank (wall) background
  • Hats and glasses can interfere with provisioning
  • Take the photo of your license/ID on a neutral background (plain desk or table), no tablecloths
  • Be sure you are using your most recent license or ID when taking the photo

Try to submit the request again. Make sure the lighting is good, and you follow the instructions until the end. If you continue to get rejected, please contact us at dl@nd.gov or 1-855-633-6835.

North Dakota Mobile ID is voluntary and serves as a companion to your physical, plastic driver license/ID - it is not a replacement of the physical card and you must continue to carry your physical driver license/ID with you. This is determined by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Please visit TSA.gov for the most up to date support for IDs in Google Wallet.

No, you are not required to have a Real ID to add your ID to Google Wallet.

NDDOT MVA created North Dakota Mobile ID as a platform that any business, government entity, or law enforcement agency can adopt and use to verify a person’s identity -- the same way your physical DL/ID is used to verify your identity. Because this technology is new, many businesses and organizations may not be aware of how to use it or have not yet developed a process to accept North Dakota Mobile ID, so customers should continue to always carry their physical DL/ID.

NDDOT will continually work with entities that frequently use DL/IDs to familiarize them with North Dakota Mobile ID and its uses. Over time, we expect mobile ID acceptance to grow. At this time North Dakota Mobile ID is accepted only at the TSA terminals around the country. This is determined by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Please visit TSA.gov for the most up to date support for IDs in Google Wallet.

This verification must be complete before a North Dakota Mobile ID may be approved. Once approved, all data is stored securely on your device, protected by both hardware and software security, inaccessible to anyone but you. Only when you unlock your device can your information be presented, so in the unfortunate instance your phone is lost or stolen, no one will be able to use your North Dakota Mobile ID without your authentication.

North Dakota Mobile ID is a new technology and is a companion to your physical, plastic driver license or ID card, which you should continue to carry.
