FAQ

North Dakota Mobile ID is a voluntary, secure, digitized version of your North Dakota-issued driver license or identification card (ID) available in Samsung Wallet. North Dakota Mobile ID offers even more security than the physical, state ID or driver license because North Dakota residents can choose what personal information to share with others.

North Dakota Mobile ID is currently the ONLY form of mobile phone-based identification that is recognized by North Dakota, and it is only available to individuals that have a current, valid North Dakota-issued driver license or ID card.

You must have an eligible North Dakota-issued driver license or identification card.

To enroll and use North Dakota Mobile ID in Samsung Wallet:

  • You must have a valid and easily readable North Dakota driver license or state-issued ID card.
  • Have a Samsung Wallet / Mobile driver license eligible device.
  • Samsung Wallet installed on a Samsung device running Android 12 or above.
  • An authentication method for your device (e.g. fingerprint or PIN).
  • Have a Samsung account.
  • Your device region set to United States.

To get North Dakota Mobile ID on your device, start with the Samsung Wallet app. Samsung Wallet app can also be downloaded in Samsung Galaxy Store. You must have Samsung Wallet installed to continue.

  1. Open the Samsung Wallet app.
  2. In the "Quick access" tab, click on the "+" button at the top right corner, click on 'Mobile IDs', then select "Driver license/State ID" from the icon list. As an alternative, this can be done from "Menu" tab by selecting the "Mobile IDs" icon, clicking on the "+" button at the top right corner, then selecting "Driver license/State ID".
  3. and hit "Next".
  4. When prompted, scan the front and back of your ID and hit "Next"
  5. Read and accept the terms and conditions to ensure you understand the face scan process and hit "Next" (this scan will not be stored on the device but will be used to match to your ID and verify your identity).
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions for your face scan. The face scan is a way to verify “you are you”, the rightful holder of the driver license or state ID and is for verification purposes only.
  7. Click "Submit" to complete the application. You will need to authenticate via fingerprint or PIN. The authentication method you choose - fingerprint or PIN - will be associated with your North Dakota Mobile ID to ensure that only you are able to access and use it.

A $5 dollar fee is required to register your driver license or ID with North Dakota Mobile ID Samsung Wallet.

Once finished, you should receive a push notification informing you of the status of your North Dakota Mobile ID request.

The verification process involves capturing a photo of the front and back of your physical card. If you don’t have one, you can request a duplicate Driver License or ID card  through NDDOT Online Services or visiting a NDOT Driver License office. There is a $8 duplicate card fee.

For most users, approval will happen on the same day. For others, additional verification may be needed, you will receive a notification with the next steps, on how to proceed, which may take a little longer.

In some cases, additional verification will be required to participate in North Dakota Mobile ID. Many residents will receive a notification of the next steps and will be able to verify through Mobile ID Online Services.

Sometimes this may require a confirmation code that will be sent to your mailing address. If you are required to provide additional verification, you will receive a notification from the Wallet with guidance on how to move forward.

Try to submit the request again. Make sure the lighting is good, and you follow the instructions until the end.

If you continue to get rejected, please email us at DL@nd.gov or contact us at 1-855-633-6835 for support.

North Dakota Mobile ID verifies your identity by performing image comparisons and validating data on-file with North Dakota Department of Transportation. This verification must be complete before a North Dakota Mobile ID may be approved. Once approved, all data is stored securely on your device, protected by both hardware and software security, inaccessible to anyone but you. Only when you unlock your device can your information be presented, so in the unfortunate instance your phone is lost or stolen, no one will be able to use your North Dakota Mobile ID without your authentication.
