Can you clarify the median tie bar (into curb) requirements: if they are needed or if there is supposed to be expansion only adjacent to the curb & gutter? There is no detail, and the typical sections are inconsistent with what is required. Two proposed typicals have tie bar on one side of the median only, one typical has no tie bar in it and one has tie bar on both sides. According to detail drawing D-750-2, the concrete median does not have tie bar tying into curb and gutter, only expansion joint.
DOT Response
The typical sections are not inconsistent with what is required, we will require what is shown. The City prefers to have additional ties in certain situations and the typical sections show this. The tie bars are desired by the City (for settlement reasons) and therefore needed only in situations where new median concrete will be next to existing curb that does not have a ledge. Standard detail D-750-2 shows only expansion adjacent to the curb but this shows new curb that has the ledge. The two typical sections you mention with ties on one side only is because one side will have new curb and gutter with a ledge, therefore no ties needed, and the other side will be new median concrete next to existing curb and gutter without a ledge, therefore ties needed. The typical section with no ties shown is because both sides will have new curb and gutter with a ledge. Expansion will still be needed as shown in the standard detail, for both scenarios.
