For the variable Aggregate Base Course, Cl 5 shown on Plan Sheet 10-1, Full Depth Reclamation Table labeled (A) = 21,318 ton discretionary if depth increase of less than 2 inches, does the Department intend to survey and blue top the finished Asphalt Emulsion Base Course (with fog coat) in order to determine the depth of ABC, Cl 5 necessary throughout the entire project length prior to paving? The ABC, Cl 5 depth could vary from 0" to 2" on top of the finished Asphalt Emulsion Base Course (with fog coat). What is the tolerance for this? What will prevent the thinner sections from sliding around and not staying in place, while also having the strength to pave over? Should a prime coat be considered on top of the ABC, Cl 5?
DOT Response
The discretionary aggregate is intended to be added following the reclamation (before asphalt stabilization). "Construction Requirements" A. General, 1. Order of Operations, of SP 542(22) calls out order of operations. Addition of discretionary aggregate per Paving Table Subnote "A" on plan sheet 10-1 would occur during the "initial grading the reclaimed material to profile" as needed to get to the proposed profile surface. Surface tolerance is identified in "Construction Requirements" B. Reclamation, 3. Surface Tolerance, of the same SP.
Grading and finish surfaces are included in the supplemental design data and would facilitate grading operations. Bluetops could be set pending survey requests for the data or check shots could occur following machine control as needed to verify grade.
