US Highway 83 intersection at Ruthville to receive upgrades

Over the next few weeks, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) will be installing additional safety enhancements to the US Highway 83 and County Road 8 intersection near Ruthville. NDDOT officials met with community members earlier this year on traffic safety concerns in the area. At that time, the NDDOT and the North Dakota Highway Patrol reduced the speed limit on US Highway 83 from the south edge of Ruthville to the Minot Air Force Base from 70 to 55 mph.

Additional safety enhancements to the intersection will include:

  • LED lighting at the intersection

  • Reflective markers to make intersection more visible

  • Signs on US Highway 83 prior to the intersection indicating ‘Intersection Ahead’

  • Painted stop bars on County Road 8 indicating where motorists should stop to provide them with the best view of approaching traffic

  • Flashing LED stop signs installed on County Road 8

Currently, the intersection is equipped with standard stop signs at County Road 8 and a flashing beacon above the intersection. The new enhancements are being implemented to alert motorists of the intersection and are expected to be completed this fall. The NDDOT will continue to evaluate the intersection.

Safety on our roadways is important to the NDDOT and is a combined effort of engineering, enforcement, education and emergency services. The state’s new traffic safety initiative called “Vision Zero” has a primary goal to continually work toward zero motor vehicle fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roads.
