Statewide – On July
1, 2018, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) implemented a
new State Fleet policy prohibiting all cell phone use while driving a state
fleet vehicle by North Dakota state employees. The NDDOT manages the North
Dakota State Fleet and initiated the policy as part of the Vision Zero strategy.
Distracted driving can have deadly consequences. It results
in about nine deaths and more
than 1,000 injuries on U.S. roadways daily, according to the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration.
“Safety on our roadways is a top priority for North
Dakota” says Tom Sorel, NDDOT Director. “Every driver and vehicle occupant in
North Dakota can help meet the Vision Zero goal by taking responsibility when
traveling on the road and this demonstrates our commitment to Vision Zero.”
At the
beginning of the year, Governor Burgum, the NDDOT, the North Dakota Highway
Patrol and the North Dakota Department of Health launched Vision Zero. Vision Zero advances evidence-based
strategies proven to reduce motor vehicle crashes through widespread public education/outreach, laws and policies that
support driver and passenger safety, high visibility enforcement of existing
laws, technology advancements, and infrastructure/road safety improvements.
