Today, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), the Associated General Contractors of North Dakota and the North Dakota Highway Patrol announced the start of the 2017 road construction season and encouraged motorists to watch for the orange cones.
This year, the NDDOT has approximately 200 projects planned throughout the state with $465 million of work taking place on highways. “Staying safe in work zones is the ultimate goal for workers and motorists alike,” says Wayde Swenson, NDDOT Director of Operations. “Maintenance and construction work zones are set up to allow a safe place for highway workers to do their jobs and they rely on motorists to pay attention.”
Some of the major DOT projects occurring this year include:
I-94 through Bismarck/Mandan
ND Highway 20 in Devils Lake
US Highway 83 bridges over the Mouse River in Minot
ND Highway 1804 from Williston to Epping
32nd Ave S in Fargo
Please see list below for more projects in specified areas
In 2016 motorists were involved in 157 crashes in work zones resulting in four fatalities. North Dakota Highway Patrol stresses the importance of obeying the posted speed limit and being patient while traveling. “While seemingly harmless, speeding through a construction zone poses many dangers to both highway workers and motorists,” says Lt. Mike Roark, ND Highway Patrol. “Troopers take construction zone violations seriously to help create a safe environment in work zones.”
In addition to slowing down, motorists should follow these tips when driving through work zones this busy travel season:
Minimize distractions. Don’t talk on your cell phone, change the radio station or do anything that takes your eyes off the road.
· Be patient. Work zones aren’t present to inconvenience drivers, they’re an important part in maintaining and rebuilding our state’s infrastructure.
Stay alert. Dedicate your full attention to the roadway.
Following these simple tips will not only help motorists stay safe, but will also help to protect construction workers who are working right along the roadway. “Contractors work hard to minimize the impacts of construction to motorists,” says Russ Hanson, Executive Vice President with the Associated General Contracts of North Dakota. “Crews are working around the clock to complete projects in North Dakota’s short construction seasonGive them room to do their job and slow down.”
