If you have been checking road condition information on the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s (NDDOT’s) Travel Information Map or the NDRoads App, you may notice more icons being used this winter. NDDOT is using these icons on our map to help you stay informed of potential traffic impacts while you travel. This winter there has been a lot of snow and there are a number of spots on our roadways that can get impacted by even slightly windy conditions and this is another tool for travelers to use to know before you go.
The “Incident” icon is used when there is an incident impacting traffic, such as a crash or jack knifed vehicle, etc. It is also being used on the Travel Information Map to indicate areas where snow drifts are reducing the roadway to one lane and may become blocked during the overnight hours when plow trucks are not operating. It is recommended to slow down and drive with care in the areas where the “Incident” icon is used.
The “Closed/Blocked” icon is used when a roadway is closed or blocked. It can be used when there is a crash or jack knifed vehicle, etc that is blocking the roadway. It is also being used on the Travel Information Map to indicate areas where snow drifts are blocking the roadway making it impassable. It is recommended to use an alternate route where the “Closed/Blocked” icon is being used.
To find out specific information regarding each icon, simply click on the icon and a description will appear.
Road conditions can change quickly this time of year and it is always recommended to check the road conditions on the NDDOT’s Travel Information Map online (dot.nd.gov) or on your phone with the NDRoads app.
