How to Apply
This will provide information for applying for the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program.
To apply for a SRTS Project use the SRTS application instructions and application form.

The information requested on the application will be used for two purposes. Initially the application will be used to determine eligibility. If the project is eligible, the application will then be used in the project selection process and awarding of funds.
Project Submissions
Project applications must be submitted to NDDOT through a Board of County Commissioners, Cities over 5000 population, and Bureau of Indian Affairs. Projects by Cities under 5000, School Districts, and nonprofit organizations need to partner with the Board of County Commissioners in their respective county.
MPO Coordination
Projects in or near Grand Forks, Fargo/West Fargo, and Bismarck/Mandan/Lincoln metro areas must be submitted to the local MPO, with the MPO making submittal to NDDOT. If you are unsure if your project is within the MPO jurisdiction, contact the MPO office in your area. MPO contact information is as follows:

Projects in MPO jurisdictions must be submitted to the MPO’s and their submittal dates are as follows:
- Fargo-Moorhead Council of Governments 4:00 p.m. January 21, 2013
- Grand Forks/East Grand Forks 12:00 p.m. February 3, 2013
- Bismarck Mandan MPO 12:00 p.m. February 6, 2013
Submission and Selection Dates
Normally, Safe Routes to School project selections will be made annually in March or April. The application submittal period begins about Labor Day and ends prior to Christmas. The deadline for the next round of applications will be posted on this web site by Labor Day.
